Incorporated on January 20, 1923, South Gate is the sixteenth largest city in Los Angeles County and encompasses 7.5 square miles. South Gate is located just 12 miles southeast of downtown Los Angeles. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the population estimate is 98,434 as of 2006.
The current area of South Gate was originally part of the Lugo Land Grant given by the King of Spain in 1810 to the Francisco Lugo Family. In the early 1900’s the land was sold and divided to set the foundation for what would eventually become the City of South Gate in 1923. As early as 1922, several small industrial plants had moved to South Gate. Families moved here and needed employment close to home; businesses, factories and industry soon followed. One of the largest local industries was Firestone Tire and Rubber Company. The factory was built on a 40-acre former bean field. Firestone's first tire rolled off the assembly line on June 15, 1928.
In 2006, the Azalea Society of America certified the City of South Gate, California, as an ASA Azalea City. The award is reserved for those municipalities that have shown by example their commitment to displaying and making azaleas a key focus in the lifestyle of the city through festivals, public and private gardens, beautification, and landscape awards. The City of South Gate has adopted the azalea as its official flower since 1965 and uses its image in the official “All American City” seal in various publications, letterhead and business cards. To this day, the community conducts an annual Azalea Festival in March and selects an “Azalea Queen” from among senior citizens who have demonstrated community service.
