Public Art Program, Partnership for Nature Conservation, and a Renovated Dispatch Service Featured in City of San Luis Obispo

Recently declared one of the four happiest places in the world and the “happiest” in North America by National Geographic author Dan Buettner and promptly featured on Oprah, San Luis Obispo is indeed a special place. With its wealth of historical and cultural attractions, surrounding open spaces, shopping and gourmet cuisine befitting of a larger city, it is the hub of San Luis Obispo County and the region known as the Central Coast.

San Luis Obispo’s success stories include the following:

• Visual Arts in Public Places Program: With the intent of providing artwork that reflects, inspires and delights the public from both up close and from afar, the City of San Luis Obispo launched a Public Art Program in 1990. The City’s public artwork collection reflects the local environment and surrounding architecture.

• Public-Private Partnership Ensures Nature Conservation: The City of San Luis Obispo is proud of its natural setting. In 1995, to bring greater guidance and a more proactive approach to the City's resource protection efforts, the Natural Resources Protection Program was created.

• Renovated Dispatch Service: From a small dark cramped dispatch center located in the basement of the City’s Police Department to a brand new building with large windows and spacious dispatch consoles, the newly built Emergency Communications Center is a whole new environment for the Communications Technicians.
